UAB Splits on Day One of Blazer Beach Bash

UAB 4, Mercer 1 Coastal Carolina 3, UAB 2 2021 Season Statistics and Results

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Blazer Beach Bash with a 4-1 victory over Mercer and a 3-2 loss to Coastal Carolina.

UAB (10-13) went up 2-1 over Coastal Carolina (who is 20-6 overall and receiving votes in the national polls), but the Chanticleers rallied to win the final two matches on courts one and three, both in three sets, for the team victory.

The day started by the Blazers defeating Mercer 4-1 with all of their victories coming in straight sets. UAB was victorious on courts one, three, four and five.

In the afternoon match, Jenna Gathright and Sarah Dickson evened the contest at 1-1 with a 21-18, 21-13 victory on court four.

SalliAnne Napolitano and Arden Copping then gave the Blazers a 2-1 advantage by winning on court two in thrilling fashion, 21-17, 30-28.

However, both courts one and three went three sets and Coastal Carolina was able to win both of them.

With two more wins today, Napolitano improved her overall record to 15-7. She now has 44 career victories which has moved her into a tie for seventh place for career wins at UAB.
