BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team defeated Spring Hill 5-0 and Southern Miss 4-1 on the final day of action at the Southern Miss Invitational, and in the process set a school record for most single season conference wins.
Members of the CCSA, arguable the toughest conference in NCAA beach volleyball, the Blazers' win over the Golden Eagles marked their fourth conference win of the season, which is now the most in a single season in school history.
"I am proud of how this team has competed all season long and we are still just scratching the surface of reaching our potential," said head coach Terri Del Conte. "It is great setting school records and we are hungry for more as the season unfolds."
The Blazers (9-12, 4-9 CCSA) swept Spring Hill in the first match of the day. Three of the five courts went three sets, but UAB was able to win all of them. With Mikayla Law-Heese out for the day, Adriana Pereira paired with Rachel Tam on court one and the duo was victorious 25-27, 23-21, 15-10 in Pereira's first ever match on court one.
In the afternoon match, all five courts went three sets with UAB winning four of five. The only match that went in favor of Southern Miss was on court three, but the Blazers were able to outlast the Golden Eagles on courts one, two, four and five.
With her two wins today on court one, Rachel Tam improved to record to 11-10 overall and she is the only player who has played all of her matches on court one this season. She is also 7-4 in three set contests.
The Blazers head to Atlanta next weekend in search of more CCSA wins at the GSU Diggin' Duals where they will face off with league opponents South Carolina, Georgia State and Southern Miss.
