UAB Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The UAB baseball team threw back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2014 on Saturday afternoon at Marshall.
UAB (18-34, 11-20 C-USA) opened the day with a 9-0 victory in game one, before a 6-0 win in game two. Marshall drops to 9-35, 5-26 C-USA.
GAME ONE – UAB 9, MARSHALL 0
Tyler O'Clair (5-4) threw the second shutout of the season in the game one victory over the Thundering Herd. O'Clair tossed seven innings, only allowing three hits while tying his career-high 10 strikeouts.
Colton Schultz led the Blazers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and notching his third home run of the season. J Paul Fullerton has had a game, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
The Blazers had the bats going early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Jess Davis drew a one-out walk and was driven in on Schultz's home run. A batter later, J. Fullerton sent a solo shot over the right field wall to take the 3-0 lead.
With bases loaded and two out in the top of the second, Schultz sent a double down the right field line to clear the bases. Ian Ladner was hit by a pitch J. Fullerton drove in two runs on a double to go up, 8-0.
After four scoreless frames, J. Fullerton hit his second home run of the contest to put the Blazers up by the eventual final tally of 9-0.
GAME TWO – UAB 6, MARSHALL 0
Nick Wright (1-0), Evan Ingram and Dylan Cunningham combined to throw the second shutout of the day. It marked the first combined shutout for the Blazers since 2012.
Chandler Simpson sent a triple down the left line to score John Marc Mullins and Caleb Floyd. In the next at-bat, J. Davis hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Simpson to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
With runners on first and second in the third, Mullins reached on a fielder's choice to score Thomas Johnston. Freshman David Harris hit his first double of the season to drive in a run going up, 5-0.
Back-to-back doubles by Zack Davis and J. Fullerton brought in a run in the sixth.
Cunningham entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and got the final three outs to seal the doubleheader sweep, 6-0.
The series concludes with the final conference game of the season on Sunday at The Kennedy Center with a 1 p.m. ET first pitch.
