BIRMINGHAM – North Texas guard Tylor Perry hit a game-winning 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to lift the Mean Green to a 58-57 victory over UAB on Saturday afternoon in Bartow Arena.
UAB (20-7, 10-4 C-USA) turned a five-point deficit into a six-point lead with an 11-0 run in the game's closing minutes, taking a 55-49 lead with 1:55 remaining when Tavin Lovan drilled a jumper in the paint. North Texas (20-4, 13-1 C-USA) hit three 3-pointers in the final 1:55 to snap UAB's 16-game winning streak in Bartow Arena.
The Blazers, who played in front a season-best crowd of 4,721 in a rowdy Bartow Arena, held a 27-25 advantage after the opening 20 minutes behind a strong team defensive performance. UAB limited the Mean Green to just 39.1% shooting from the field, stretching its lead to six points three times in the opening half. Quan Jackson, who led the Blazers with 10 rebounds, extended the Blazers' advantage to six points for the third and final time in the first half when he knocked down a free throw with 6:40 remaining on the first-half clock.
After the break, North Texas would twice build its lead to a game-high seven points, holding a 43-36 edge over the Blazers when Rubin Jones converted a jumper with 11:33 remaining in the game. Jordan Walker, who finished Saturday's game with a team-high 17 points, drilled back-to-back shots to trim UAB's deficit to two with a pull-up jumper and a 3-pointer with 9:39 remaining, forcing a North Texas timeout.
KJ Buffen would vault the Blazers back in front for the first time since 16:37 in the second half when he converted a second-chance opportunity to give UAB a 51-49 lead with 4:23 left on the clock. Jumpers from Jackson and Lovan would then stretch UAB's lead out to 55-49 with 1:55 remaining.
UAB outscored the Mean Green 30-22 in the paint and 10-4 in points off turnovers in Saturday's setback. Walker (17) and Lovan (12) paced the Blazers in scoring.
North Texas' Tylor Perry finished his standout performance with a game-high 25 points, going 6-of-9 from behind the 3-point line for UNT.
