UAB Travels to Samford, Alabama State for In-State Matchups

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team will face a pair of in-state opponents this week, taking on Samford and Alabama State on the road.
Thursday's match at Samford is set to begin at 2 p.m., while Friday's match at Alabama State is set to begin at 1 p.m. in Montgomery. Thursday's match against the Bulldogs will stream live on ESPN+.
UAB LATELY
UAB (6-11) dropped matches to two ITA Top 75 teams on March 19-20, falling 4-3 at No. 72 William & Mary before suffering a 6-1 setback at No. 60 Old Dominion.
The Blazers opened their match at William & Mary with a win in doubles, clinching victories on courts two and three to start the match with a 1-0 lead. Roman Postolka and Michal Lusovsky would then tally singles victories in straight sets, giving the Green and Gold a 3-2 advantage. William & Mary, however, would rally from a 3-2 deficit with wins on courts two and six, sealing the match victory with a 4-6, 7-5. 6-4 win on court six.
The Blazers then fell 6-1 in C-USA play to No. 60 Old Dominion. Roman Postolka earned UAB's sole victory in singles with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win on court three. Lusovsky dropped a tightly contested battle to ODU ace Luca Maldoner 6-2, 3-6, 3-6.
Lusovsky paces the Blazers with a 10-6 record in singles play this spring, playing all 16 of his matches on court one. The junior is 8-2 in his past 10 matches. Postolka, who is a perfect 7-0 on court four this season, holds a 9-4 record in the spring.
SAMFORD
Samford (3-11) enters Thursday's match with losses in four of its past five contests, dropping two of those in tight 4-3 decisions. The Bulldogs have earned wins over Alabama A&M, Tennessee State and The Citadel in the spring.
Samford holds a 27-46 record in singles and a 20-17 record in doubles play. Mohammed Ali Bellalouna leads the Bulldogs with a 9-3 mark in singles action, holding a 6-1 record on court two.
The Blazers hold a 14-4 series advantage over Samford, but the Bulldogs have won three of the past five matchups, including two this past season.
ALABAMA STATE
Alabama State (7-6) is 4-1 in its past five matches, which includes a 4-3 victory over Samford in Homewood. Aside from a perfect 5-0 conference record in the SWAC, the Hornets have earned wins over Southern Miss (4-1) and Samford (4-3).
Alabama State holds a 26-28 record in singles play and a 14-21 mark in doubles. Freshman Matis Amier leads the Hornets with a 7-3 record.
UAB is 3-0 all-time against Alabama State, winning all three matches in Birmingham. The Blazers earned a 7-0 win over the Hornets in the most recent matchup on March 8, 2019.
