UAB Men’s Tennis Set for Conference USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team will begin its journey for its first Conference USA title in program history when the Blazers take on No. 18 Middle Tennessee on Friday afternoon in Norfolk, Virginia.
First serve for the match between the eighth-seeded Blazers and top-seeded Blue Raiders is set for 1 p.m. CT at Old Dominion's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers (8-14, 1-1 C-USA) closed out their regular season schedule with a victory in match two of Friday's home doubleheader, besting in-state opponent West Alabama 4-3.
After dropping the doubles point to UWA, the Blazers recorded four of the first five wins in singles play to clinch the victory. Ace Michal Lusovsky, Noah Malige, Thanos Spyropoulos and Roman Postolka all earned wins in singles play to help UAB clinch the 4-3 win.
UAB fell 6-1 to Tennessee Tech in the opening match of Friday's doubleheader. Lusovsky posted the Blazers' sole victory of the contest, defeating TTU ace Elias Grubert in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
The Blazers hold a 54-71 record in singles play this season. Lusovsky (15-6) and Postolka (12-6) lead the Blazers in singles victories. UAB is 20-37 in doubles play as Postolka leads the way with a 9-8 overall record in doubles action.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE LATELY
Middle Tennessee (24-4, 2-0 C-USA) holds eight victories over Top 75 ITA teams this season, which includes three straight wins over ITA Top 50 opponents Tulane (No. 48), Arizona (No. 19) and Princeton (No. 29) at the Blue Gray Championships in February.
The Blue Raiders are 111-36 in singles matches this season, which includes a 16-6 record from ace Stijn Slump. Chris Edge leads Middle Tennessee with a 19-7 record in singles. In doubles, the Blue Raiders hold a 49-16 record, which includes a 20-4 mark in doubles play from graduate student Chris Edge.
THE SERIES AGAINST MIDDLE TENNESSEE
The Blazers are 12-14 all-time against Middle Tennessee, holding a 5-2 advantage over the Blue Raiders in neutral site matchups. Middle Tennessee has won the past five matches in the series with the Blazers' last win over the Blue Raiders coming back on March 25, 2016.
LAST TIME AGAINST MIDDLE TENNESSEE
UAB's most recent matchup against the Blue Raiders came in the Blazers' season finale in 2021, falling 4-0 to No. 44 Middle Tennessee in the opening round of the Conference USA Championship.
UAB IN THE CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP
Since the C-USA's formation in 1996, the Blazers hold a 19-29 overall record in the Conference USA Championship. UAB's last win in the C-USA Championship came back in 2016, knocking off Southern Miss 4-2. The Blazers have never won a Conference USA Championship, but they did win a Sun Belt Conference title and four straight Great Midwest Conference championships from 1991-95.
