UAB Drops Game One to Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM – UAB (8-17, 2-5) dropped the opening game to Charlotte (12-13, 4-3) by a score of 11-3 on Friday, March 31.
Charlotte held the lead the entire game after having scored in the second, fourth, seventh and eighth innings while UAB scored its runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Christian Hall led-off the ninth with a solo home run to right field to collect his third homer of the season.
Brooks Walton started on the mound for the Blazers and received the loss after he allowed three runs – two earned – on eight hits and collected seven strikeouts through six complete innings. Six UAB relievers followed – Christian Clack, Leo Harris, Tyler Haines, Jonah Smith, JC Sewell and Matthew Reed. Clack and Harris threw for a combined inning and gave up three runs on two hits with two strikeouts while Haines and Smith faced a combined four batters and allowed four runs. Sewell and Reed both spent an inning on the mound for UAB. Sewell allowed one run on one hit, and Reed closed out the game to only allow two hits through five batters.
Offensively, Hall (2-for-3) posted the only multi-hit game after he reached base twice – a single and a walk – and hit a solo shot in the ninth. Logan Braunschweig, Brayton Brown and Gavin Lewis Jr. all collected a hit on the night. After Hall walked in the seventh, Braunschweig hit a double followed by Brown driving in the two baserunners on a two RBI single to put the Blazers on the board. UAB did not score again until the ninth.
