BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team will travel to California this weekend, March 11-12, for the Malibu Challenge hosted by Pepperdine.
While in Malibu, the Blazers will play North Florida (5-3) and San Francisco (0-5) on Saturday, followed by and No. 17 Pepperdine (3-1) on Sunday. After the match against Pepperdine on Sunday, UAB will make the short trip to Cal State Northridge (7-4) for a standalone match against the Matadors that afternoon at 3 p.m. PST.
UAB enters the weekend at 5-4 overall and will look for its first win over a nationally ranked opponent this season. UAB is 0-3 against such teams with losses to No. 3 TCU (who is now No. 1), No. 5 LSU and No. 19 South Carolina. Additionally, North Florida is receiving votes in the national rankings this week.
UAB's top pair of Brooke Pertuit and Jasmine Haas had a standout weekend at the Tiger Beach Challenge and look to continue that momentum in Malibu. The duo went 4-1 together on Court 1, which included a win over South Carolina's top pair. Both Pertuit and Haas have a team-best 6-3 individual record this season.
UAB is 1-6 all-time against North Florida and is 0-2 against Pepperdine. This will be the first ever meeting against San Francisco and Cal State Northridge.
