UAB Blazers Set to Host Mississippi State Bulldogs at Young Memorial Field

BIRMINGHAM – UAB (10-21) will host SEC foe Mississippi State (19-14) for a mid-week matchup on Tuesday, April 11. First pitch at Young Memorial Field will air on ESPN+ at 6 P.M.

The two programs are no strangers to one another since the Blazers and Bulldogs have played at most two games per year for the last 41 years. However, this will be the first time since 2011 that the two teams will meet again at Young Memorial Field. The last time Mississippi State visited YMF, UAB defeated the Bulldogs 6-4 after the game, originally scheduled for March 9, 2011, resumed play on April 13, 2011.
The Blazers will enter the week after having dropped their Conference USA series to Dallas Baptist University last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. UAB has won its last three-out-of-four mid-week games including beating Auburn on Tuesday, April 4 by a score of 6-5 after Henry Hunter hit a walk-off single to drive in the winning run.
Mississippi State collected its first SEC series win of the year after taking two of the three games against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. this past weekend. The Bulldogs enter the matchup 2-7 in road games and 8-1 in mid-weeks including last week's 21-2 defeat versus Grambling.
GAME INFORMATION & PROMOTION
Tickets are still available to purchase online or in-person at the ticket booth. Fans are encouraged to bring personal lawn chairs for seating along the first and third base sides and behind right field. UAB's regular cashless concessions will be available throughout the game. For the first 100 UAB students who arrive to YMF, they will receive free pizza.
UAB BLAZERS
Logan Braunschweig sits with the highest batting average for the Blazers (.354) while Tyler Waugh (.307) and Christian Hall (.282) follow behind. Over the past week, Waugh hit .437 (7-for-16) including a multi-hit game verses Auburn and two multi-hit games during the DBU series.
Breaking it down, Brayton Brown leads the team in doubles (8) and home runs (4). Three other Blazers have four doubles – Braunschweig, Hall and Waugh. Four UAB batters have collected the Blazers' nine triples of the year which include Henry Hunter (3) and Ben Abernathy, John Marc Mullins and Braunschweig who all have two.
In the final game of the DBU series, Mullins broke out of a hitting slump after he collected a single then scored one of UAB's runs. Isaiah Mack, who started three of the four games last week in the designated hitter hole, received his first collegiate hit – a double - on April 7 against DBU and collected his first career RBI versus Auburn on April 4.
Braxton Shelton (1-1, 4.41) will appear on the mound for the Blazers while making his third straight start for UAB. Shelton is coming off a no decision versus Auburn last Tuesday after he threw four complete innings and allowed four runs – earned – on five hits with four strikeouts.
MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs offense is currently being led by Hunter Hines who sits with the most hits (44) and home runs (14) with the second highest batting average (.346). Hines also has the highest slugging percentage (.748) and on-base percentage (.406). Bryce Chance has the highest batting average (.353) with Colton Ledbetter closely behind Hines (.339). Amani Larry leads the team in runs (43) while Luke Hancock leads in doubles (11). Mississippi State only has two triples on the year compared to UAB's nine and sits with a .960 fielding percentage versus the Blazers' (.977). Parker Stinnett will make his second start of the season for the Bulldogs. Through his three appearances, Stinnett's record sits 1-0 with a 20.25 ERA.

In the last meeting UAB lead the game twice after having multi-runs in the first and ninth innings, but Mississippi State tied the game in the ninth to force extra innings before taking the mid-week game by a score of 6-5.
