UAB Women’s Tennis Begins Quest for Conference USA Title

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB women's tennis team begins its quest for its first Conference USA title since the 1996 season when the Blazers take on UTSA on Thursday morning in the First Round of the C-USA Championship. Match time is 10 a.m.. The four day event runs from April 20-23 and will take place at the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton. Texas hosted by North Texas.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers (9-9, 2-2 C-USA) are the No. 9 seed and are coming off a 6-1 victory over Middle Tennessee on April 15.
UTSA LATELY
The Roadrunners (13-9, 3-1 C-USA) are the No. 8 seed and are coming off a 5-2 win over Houston on April 9.
THE SERIES AGAINST UTSA
The teams have met four times, with UAB winning three of the matches. The series began in 2012 and has been played in 2014, 2015 and 2021.
LAST TIME AGAINST UTSA
The No. 8 seed UAB women's tennis team, advanced to the Conference USA quarterfinals after a 4-0 win over No. 9 seed UTSA on April 22, 2021. This marked the first time a Blazer team has advanced in the conference tournament since the 2014 season.
UAB took the doubles point with an Adela Wasserbauerova and Dominika Hrabalova 6-4 win on Court 1. Maggie White and Alexandra da Silva clinched the doubles point on Court 3 by winning in a breaker, 7-6.
Annalisa Smith was a straight set winner on Court 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory to put the Blazers ahead 2-0. Sydney Clarke took the match on Court 4 to give UAB a 3-0 advantage with a 7-6, 6-1 win. Wasserbauerova got the clincher on Court 2, winning 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.
UAB IN THE CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP
Since C-USA's formation in 1996, the Blazers have a 24-26 overall record in the tournament. The Blazers have gone to the championship match four times – 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2001 – taking home the title in 1996.
