BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team looks to stamp its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history this week at the Conference USA Championship in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
The Blazers finished the regular season at 16-14 overall and 2-1 in league play to earn the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 UTEP in the first round. The winner of the UAB-UTEP matchup will advance to face top-seeded and No. 12 nationally-ranked FIU. The tournament is a double elimination format all the way through and runs from Thursday-Saturday.
The six-team field is made up of FAU, FIU, Jacksonville State, Tulane, UAB and UTEP. FIU earned the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 FAU, No. 3 Tulane, No. 4 UAB, No. 5 UTEP and No. 6 Jacksonville State. The conference features three teams ranked in the AVCA Top 20, while UAB has been close to being ranked all year with a daunting schedule that includes facing 13 ranked opponents. UAB has not played FAU, FIU or UTEP this season, but is 1-1 against Tulane with each match decided by a score of 3-2, and is 1-0 against Jax State with a 5-0 victory in Birmingham.
Brooke Pertuit headlines UAB's lineup as she is just the fourth player in school history to win 20 matches in a single season. She is 10-8 on Court 1 and 10-2 on Court 2. Pertuit recently paired with Mikayla-Law Heese and the duo is 6-1 together on Court 2. UAB's top pair of Arden Copping and Jasmine Haas are coming off a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Blazer Beach Bash and are 6-5 overall together. Haas is a true freshman who set the single season school record for most wins by a freshman. She currently has 18 victories and is 18-12 overall with all of her matches coming on either Court 1 or Court 2.
UAB and UTEP (4-17) are scheduled to play at 9 a.m. EST on Thursday morning in the first match of the tournament. The winner will play FIU at 12 p.m. on Thursday. If UAB defeats both UTEP and FIU, they will continue on in the winner's bracket at 12 p.m. on Friday, and if they lose one of those matches they will play at 9 a.m. or 10:30 on Friday.
