UAB Men’s Soccer Falls in Season Finale to South Florida

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's soccer (4-6-5, 1-4-2 AAC) fell by a score of 4-2 to South Florida (6-5-4, 4-3 AAC), concluding the 2024 season on Friday night.
The Bulls jumped ahead in the 6th minute after Jalen Anderson was able to convert on the penalty kick after Gunnar Studenhofft was taken down in the box.
In the 25th minute, the Blazers had a free kick from the edge of the box on the wing and after the ball was crossed into the box, one of the USF players fell to the ground. Following a VAR review, Mathias Love Groth was given a red card, and the Blazers were shorthanded for the remainder of the night.
Only a few minutes later, a foul right on the edge of the box gave UAB a chance to level the match and Lucas Rizzo delivered. On the free kick, Rizzo found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season, curling the ball right over the top of the wall to make it 1-1.
USF was able to regain the lead in the 39th minute after the ball was misplayed by Munteanu, allowing Julio Plata to have a wide-open look at the net. South Florida added a third goal in the 44th minute off a corner kick to make it 3-1 heading into halftime.
The Blazers regrouped in the second half and looked to build chances despite being down a man.
In the 77th minute, immediately after being subbed on, freshman Patrik Fagan came through for the Blazers. Fagan headed home his first collegiate goal after a cross from fellow freshman Ole Jessen found him in the box.
However, the Bulls were able to put the match away when John Adekunle sliced his way past the Blazer back line and fire a shot with his right foot past the UAB keeper to make it 4-2.
