UAB Softball to Host Green and Gold Classic

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team opens its home schedule this weekend, Feb. 23-25, with the Green and Gold Classic at Mary Bowers Field.
The Blazers are set to welcome No. 10 Alabama, Bradley, North Alabama and Western Carolina to Birmingham. The tournament begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. and will feature 12 games throughout the weekend.
Green and Gold Classic Schedule (team listed second is the designated home team):
Feb. 23
9 a.m. – Bradley vs. North Alabama
11:15 a.m. – North Alabama vs. Western Carolina
1:30 p.m. – Bradley at UAB
3:45 p.m. – Alabama at UAB
6 p.m. – Western Carolina vs. Alabama
Feb. 24
9 a.m. – Bradley vs. Western Carolina
11:15 a.m. – Western Carolina at UAB
1:30 p.m. – North Alabama at UAB
3:45 p.m. – Alabama vs. Bradley
6 p.m. – North Alabama vs. Alabama
Feb. 25
8:30 a.m. – Western Carolina vs. Bradley
11 a.m. – Alabama at UAB
The Blazers enter the tournament at 4-6 overall and are coming off a midweek victory at Samford. UAB rallied against the Bulldogs to force extra innings, then erupted in the top of the 10th with six runs which led to a 10-4 victory.
Bella Wiggins (.400) and Lindsey Smith (.385) continue to lead UAB at the plate as both share a team-high 10 hits.
Smith paces the offense in RBI (10), doubles (4) and home runs (2), while Wiggins is the lead leader in triples (3), walks (9) and on base percentage (.571).
In the circle, Leigha Kirby picked up the win against Samford after pitching nine innings against the Bulldogs. Kirby is 2-3 on the season with a 3.72 ERA in 26.1 innings of work. Caitlin Russell will also see the circle this weekend and enters the tournament with a 2.88 ERA in 17.0 innings pitched.
SCOUTING THE FIELD:
No. 10 Alabama brings an unblemished 11-0 record with them to the tournament this weekend. The Blazers will have two opportunities this weekend to earn the program's first ever win over the Crimson Tide.
Bradley is playing its second tournament of the season and carries a 1-4 record into Birmingham. North Alabama is 7-4 this year, while Western Carolina is 2-1 overall.
