BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team defeated Bradley and fell to No. 10 Alabama on the first day of the Green and Gold Classic at Mary Bowers Field.
The Blazers (5-7) opened the day with a 2-0 victory over Bradley and then suffered an 8-0 loss to No. 10 Alabama in five innings.
GAME ONE: UAB 2, BRADLEY 0
Olivia Valbak pitched a complete game shutout and Bella Wiggins provided the offensive spark in UAB's 2-0 victory over the Braves.
Valbak allowed just four hits and struck out four batters in the win. Wiggins gave Valbak all the insurance she would need with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first and then crossed the plate two batters later on a throwing error from the Braves' shortstop.
Wiggins added an insurance RBI in the bottom of the fifth and finished the game 2-for-3.
GAME TWO: NO. 10 ALABAMA 8, UAB 0 (5 Inn.)
Alabama scored eight runs on seven hits in the top of the first inning and that is all the Tide would need to defeat the Blazers.
All eight runs were unearned as a fielding error kept the inning alive. In all, the Tide sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning.
Freshman relief pitcher AJ Kramer entered the game in the first and pitched very well for the Blazers for the reminder of the game. Kramer pitched 4.1 innings and allowed just three hits, no runs and struck out two batters.
UP NEXT:
The Blazers are back in action on Saturday against Western Carolina at 11:15 a.m. and North Alabama at 1:30 p.m.
