STARKVILLE – UAB Track and Field finished the Mississippi State Bulldog Alumni Relays with multiple performances that landed athletes at the top of the results. The Blazers finished the meet with ten Top 10 meet finishes and seven Top 10 AAC performances over the weekend. The Green and Gold also rewrote the record books with a new performance to crest the record books in outdoor.
"The team overall had a competitive meet. We got our outdoor feet wet last week and had a great week of training, and the ladies came out and put up some good marks, executed good events, and started to show what they're capable of," said head coach Kurt Thomas.
Mya McDanal threw a PR performance in her first attempt in the javelin, placing her third in the event with a 42.52m. Birthe Franck-Petersen had a notable showing in the shot put, where she finished with a 13.08m throw, placing her tenth in the conference with her performance. "Mya has been coming back from a big injury and just let it rip the first throw to a PR. The throwers did well this weekend, and Ali raced a good 800 race."
Freshmen Gabby Washington and Jasmine Dereje had impressive performances in the 200-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Washington finished with a 24.04, placing her eighth all-time in UAB's outdoor performances. She also finished with a top-five finish in the 400 with a 56.29.
Dereje placed 5th in the 400 hurdles, putting her third in the AAC with her 1:02.25 time. On the opposite side, Alicia Abalos Cervera finished third in the 800 at the meet, sitting sixth in the conference.
"Jasmine executed a good 400m hurdle race and Gabby had a great weekend in the 400m and big 200m PR. We're happy but not satisfied and will get back to work and prepare for a home meet next week," said Coach Thomas.
