BIRMINGHAM – Coming off its one and only bye week of the season, the UAB beach volleyball team returns to action at the North Florida Invite this Friday and Saturday, March 29-30, in Jacksonville.
The Blazers (10-6) have four matches this weekend beginning on Friday with the College of Charleston and the host Osprey, followed by Saturday matches against New Orleans and Mercer. Friday's match against UNF at 11 a.m. CT can be seen on ESPN+.
UAB looks to keep its momentum going from the Sugar Beach Bash two weeks ago where they went 3-1 which included a win over No. 20 Tampa. Overall, the Blazers have won four of their last five and are well rested coming off an open week.
Court 1 blocker Arden Copping became the winningest player in program history with her victory over Southern Miss at the Sugar Beach Bash, which was her 59th career win and moved her ahead of Emma Andraka who previously held the record with 58. Copping is the only player in school history with 60 career victories and is 11-4 this season on Court 1.
Her partner Jasmine Haas already has 31 career wins just midway through her sophomore season with 25 of them coming on Court 1. The reigning CUSA Freshman of the Year currently ranks fourth in program history with 25 Court 1 wins and could break that record this season with 10 more victories on the top court.
A few other Blazers are poised for milestones this weekend as Court 2 blocker Jessica Ennis needs two more wins to become just the fifth player in school history with 50 career victories, while Court 3 blocker Brooke Pertuit is one win away from 70 career wins. Pertuit started her career at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and tallied 36 wins as an Islander and currently has a record of 33-17 as a Blazer.
UNF has been a tough matchup for UAB historically as the Osprey lead the all-time series 7-1 over the Blazers. UAB is 25-12 against the rest the field with a record of 5-3 vs. College of Charleston, 14-9 vs. Mercer and 6-0 against New Orleans.
Following UNF, UAB returns to the Sunshine State for the FSU Unconquered Invitational where they will face four teams that are currently nationally ranked in No. 5 Florida State, No. 9 Loyola Marymount, No. 14 FIU and No. 20 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
