UAB Beach Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Blazer Beach Bash

UAB 3, Mercer 2 UNA 4, UAB 1

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team defeated Mercer 3-2 and fell to North Alabama 4-1 on the final day of the Blazer Beach Bash Sunday in Birmingham.

UAB finished the Blazer Beach Bash at 2-1 and now has an overall record of 15-12 this season.

MATCH ONE: UAB 3, MERCER 2

With the match on the line, it came down to the third set on Court 5, and the freshman pair of Addison Atkins and Lauren Mohler came out with a 15-12 set three victory to give UAB a 3-2 win.

Jessica Ennis and Isable Day got the Blazers off to a fast start with a straight set 21-10, 23-21 victory to give UAB a 1-0 lead. The Bears tied it up with a victory on Court 4.

UAB's top pair of Arden Copping and Jasmine Haas put the Blazers ahead 2-1 with a 21-19, 21-16 victory on Court 1, but the Bears once again tied up the match with a Court 3 victory.

Atkins and Mohler won the first set 22-20 then dropped the second set 21-14, however they were able to rally in the third set and pulled ahead late for the 15-12 victory.

MATCH TWO: NORTH ALABAMA 4, UAB 1

UAB's Court 3 pair of Brooke Pertuit and Olivia Chychrun defeated the Lions 21-13, 21-19, but that would be the only win for the Blazers.

In the first wave, Court 2 went three sets as Jessica Ennis and Isabel Day traded 24-22 set scores with UNA, but the Lions took the third 15-9.

UNA was able to win courts one, four and five in straight sets for the victory.

The Blazers now have a rematch with UNA on Tuesday and will also play UT Martin while in Florence. UAB's matches are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
