Blazers Win Two on the Weekend

FLORENCE - The UAB Volleyball team won two games on Friday at the UNA Volleyball Classic against Jacksonville State and North Alabama. On Saturday, the Blazers lost to Arkansas State for just the fifth time ever.
The Blazers faced off against in-state rivals Jacksonville state first. They battled in their first five set win match of the year winning 3-2. Three players had double-digit kills including Jorda Crook (16), Mia Reese (16), and Kelsey Smith (12). Kelsey Smith grabbed her 7th triple double of her career with 12 kills, 28 assists, and 12 digs. Brooklyn Allison also showed out adding a career high of 27 digs.
UAB took an early 2-0 lead before the Gamecocks stormed back to win sets three and four. UAB had previously played in four four-set matches and one-three set match. The Blazers hit 0.135 and 0.138 in sets one and four. UAB did not dominate the statistics in this one with Jacksonville State having more kills and a better hitting percentage than the Blazers. UAB hit 0.199 total while Jacksonville State hit 0.216. UAB won this one with a stellar fifth set 3-2 (25-23, 25-17, 18-25, 22-25, 15-12).
The Blazers came out in the next game of the day and swept UNA 3-0. UAB dominated the first two sets allowing just 13 and 16 points. The third set was a little different, with UNA taking their first lead of the match at 8-7. Jorda Crook achieved a career high in blocks with six. Before the weekend, Crook ranked 72nd in the country in hitting percentage (0.378). This total is good enough for third in the conference. UAB came back and won the third set 25-20, sweeping UNA 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-20).
Next up UAB took on Arkansas State who won both of their matches on Friday as well. The Red Wolves beat UNA 3-1 and Jacksonville State 3-2. Arkansas State led almost the entire way with UAB leading just one time during the third set. The Red Wolves dominated the stats with a 0.458 hitting percentage and only eight attacking errors. This one ended with a 3-0 Arkansas State win (12-25, 12-25, 21-25).

UAB will host the Alabama Showdown next weekend with three games against South Alabama, Auburn, and Samford.
