BIRMINGHAM - The UAB Department of Athletics has announced that the Collat family has made a commitment of $250,000 in support of the Bartow Arena renovation project.
"Our family believes in UAB and believes it's important to support the largest employer in our state. We believe in students having a complete experience, both academically and socially. Athletics is a key component to that, and to be successful, it has to be supported," Nancy Collat Goedecke said. "We are excited about the progress that's been made to enhance our athletics profile over the last ten years, and while there is still much to be done, renovating Bartow Arena is an important step."
Nancy Collat Goedecke took over Mayer Electric Supply Company, Inc. in 2008 from her father Charles Collat, Sr. who had grown the company to one of Birmingham's largest privately held corporations. The Collat family's success in business is only matched by their commitment to improving both UAB and Birmingham. The Collat and Goedecke families have a long-standing tradition of service to the Birmingham community, and their impact has been consistently demonstrated as volunteers, mentors and donors.
The Collat family has invested in programs at UAB through corporate and personal support for many years. In 2013, Charles and Patsy Collat made a transformational gift to UAB's School of Business which established the first named school at UAB. The Collat family also made a lead gift towards the return of UAB Football, Bowling and Rifle.
"We are very grateful to the Collat family for their transformational impact on UAB and UAB Athletics," said Director of Athletics Mark Ingram. "Their investment in the Bartow Arena project will raise the profile of UAB and the Birmingham community for years to come. We appreciate their continued belief in impacting the lives of students and student-athletes here at UAB."
The $14.6 million Bartow Arena renovation project is intended to feature four main components:
