Blazers Fall on Tuesday Night to Mississippi State

BIRMINGHAM - UAB Baseball (18-15) dropped the midweek contest to Mississippi State (20-13) on Tuesday night at Young Memorial Field, 8-3. Each team's pitching staff recorded 12 strikeouts and surrendered three walks on the night.
The Bulldogs got going early as they struck for two runs in the top half of the first. With two on and nobody out, starting pitcher Noah Sullivan doubled down the right field line to score Gehrig Frei. The next batter was Hunter Hines who grounded out to first to score Ace Reese.
The Green and Gold answered back in the bottom of the 2nd when they struck for two of their own. JP Head recorded his first career hit and RBI on a double to score Camden Hayslip from first. On the next pitch, Landon Beaver doubled to score Head to tie the game at two.
Both teams were held scoreless from then until the top of the 5th when State got going again. Frei doubled to score Ross Highfill to put the Dawgs up 3-2. Frei advanced to third on a throwing error. The next batter was Ace Reese who beat out an infield single while the Blazers were shifted to score Frei and add to the lead. Then, it was Sullivan again and this time homered to left to put MSU up 6-2.
The Blazers answered back with one run in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and two strikes, Nick Hollifield doubled home Logan Braunschweig to cut the lead to 6-3.
The Bulldogs got two more runs in the top half of the 8th when Gatlin Sanders singled to score Sullivan and Bryce Chance and wrapped up the scoring on the night.
Ryan McPherson earned his third win of the season by going four innings in relief of Sullivan. The freshman struck out five and allowed just one run. Nate Williams and Luke Dotson combined to pitch the final three innings and struck out six Blazer hitters.
