UAB Splits Day One in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - UAB opened the day with a 3-2 victory against hosts Evansville, then fell 3-0 to Morehead State. The Blazers jumped ahead of Evansville 2-0 with a pair of dominant set wins, but dropped two tight sets before defeating the Purple Aces 15-11 in the fifth set. Morehead State won three back-and-forth sets, only winning sets by two and three points. Jorda Crook led the Blazers with 33 kills on the day, hitting .329.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UAB 3, Evansville 2
Evansville hung in with UAB in the first set for a little while, pulling within two points when the Blazers led 10-8. UAB then went on a 15-3 run, including four consecutive aces by Reese. A heap of errors from Evansville, along with two Crook kills, set up the set to end on a pair of Juliet Galla aces. Crook was a perfect five-for-five in the set. UAB was nearly perfect as a team, hitting .769 while siding out on 10 of 11 attempts
A 9-3 run early in the second set gave the Blazers an 11-6 lead. A brief Evansville comeback attempt was ended when UAB went on a five-point run to win the set. Addyson Smock went three-for-three in the set with a block to go with the perfect frame.
Evansville pulled ahead in the third set, leading 16-8 at one point before UAB went on a 14-4 run to take a 22-20 lead. Despite the comeback, Evansville responded with four consecutive points, ultimately winning the set, 25-23. After a back-and-forth first 18 points of the fourth set, Evansville used a four-point streak and a 4-1 run to pull ahead of the Blazers. Once again, UAB fought back to tie, this time at 21-21, but Evansville would end the set on a 4-1 run.
Tied 5-5 in the fifth set, three Purple Ace errors and a Mia Reese kill gave UAB a four-point lead. Three more Evansville errors gave the Blazers a 12-6 lead. UAB eventually closed the set on Crook's 21st kill of the match.
Morehead State 3, UAB 0
The first set opened with each team going on a long run. Morehead State won 10 consecutive points to take a 10-1 lead, which UAB responded to with a six-point lead, to cut the deficit to three. Down 17-12, UAB won four consecutive points to pull within one point. However, Morehead State won five of the next six points. UAB cut the lead down once again with a 5-1 run to make the score 23-22. Two Morehead State kills won the opening set for the Eagles.
Morehead State won the first four points of the second set, then pulled ahead again with a 9-5 lead. Another 5-1 run by UAB tied the set at 10. Morehead State would slowly pull away with a 19-15 lead, but once again, UAB clawed back to tie at 21. Trading points, UAB and Morehead State were tied at 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26, before UAB held set point at 27-26. Two Eagle kills and a Blazer error gave Morehead State the three-point comeback they needed to win the second set.
UAB opened the third set with a strong lead for the first time in the match, leading 5-1. Morehead State turned the set on its head with an 11-2 run to take a 12-7 lead. UAB chipped away at the Morehead State lead for another comeback, tying the set at 18. Up 22-21, Morehead State won three of the final four points with a UAB service error and a pair of kills.
Despite making a nine-point, four-point, and five-point comeback in each set, respectively, UAB was never able to complete the comeback.
STANDOUTS
Crook recorded her third 20-kill match of the season with her 21 kills on .405 hitting efficiency against Evansville. Crook's 12 digs gave her her second double-double of the season and sixth of her career. Crook added to her day total with 12 kills against Morehead State, with eight digs and four total blocks.
Summer Snead hit .636 on 11 attempts with eight kills and just one error against the Purple Aces.
Riley Lovell set a career-high with 25 assists against Evansville, the first time she's led the Blazers in assists during a match. Lovell followed up the performance by leading UAB once again with 15 assists against Morehead State.
Kennedy Vaughn hit .385 against Morehead State with a career-high seven kills.

UAB is right back at the Carson Center at the Meeks Family Fieldhouse tomorrow at 11 a.m., to close its time in the Hoosier state. The Blazers will take on Western Illinois, who entered the weekend 1-5 before losing to Morehead State earlier this morning. The Leathernecks will have one more result under their belts before facing UAB as they take on tournament hosts Evansville, Friday night.
