UAB’s Third Quarter Surge Fuels 81-69 Win Over UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (9-13, 2-8 American) used a dominate third quarter and balanced scoring to pull away from UTSA (10-11, 5-5 American) and secure an 81-69 victory on Tuesday night at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers had six players score in double figures with Molly Moffitt leading the way recording 19 points. Cali Smallwood registered 15 points while Journey Armstead followed behind with 13 points. Eleecia Carter tallied 12 points and Monae' Duffy and Sofia Munoz recording 11 points each.
Ereauna Hardaway led the Roadrunners 17 points and Cheyenne Rowe followed with 16 points. Idara Udo came away with 12 points.

- Moffitt recorded a career-high four assists on top of 19 points and going 8-for-14 from the field.
- Armstead had a career-high nine free throws, matched her season-high 13 points and two steals.
- UAB had 19 assists on the night with Smallwood leading with seven. Carter totaled five, Moffitt had four and Armstead tallied two.
- Duffy led the Blazers with eight rebounds, four coming offensively and four defensively.
- The Blazers outscored UTSA 27-14 in the third quarter, turning a five-point halftime lead into an 18-point cushion.
- UAB shot 65 percent in the third and 75 percent from the three to push the lead.
- The Blazers 27 points in the third was the second most points UAB has scored in the third quarter this season (32 – at Murray State Nov. 22).
- The Green and Gold recorded 19 assists on 30 made field goals.
- UAB led for 27:24 of the game and built its largest lead at 21 points in the fourth quarter.
- UAB improved its shooting efficiency in every quarter, closing the game by going 9-for-12 at the free throw line.
- Eight of the 12 free throws in the fourth quarter were made by Armstead.
- The Blazers scored 38 points in the paint, 20 points off turnovers, 13 bench points and 11 fast break points.
- UAB's defense held the Roadrunners to shooting 41 percent from the field and 27 percent from the perimeter.
- The Blazers were 57 percent from the field, 43 percent from the three and 80 percent at the line.
- UTSA jumped out early, building a five-point lead off a three and a layup off a turnover [5-0].
- Moffitt knocked down an early three to help UAB settle in offensively [5-3].

- Smallwood capped the quarter with consecutive three-pointers, pushing the lead to 18 [59-41].
- To open the fourth, Smallwood finished in transition with Carter facilitating the assist [63-43].
- UAB's largest lead came when Smallwood hit a triple with 5:35 remaining [68-47]
- UTSA attempted to rally in the paint, but the Blazers answered every push [76-63].
- The Green and Gold closed the game comfortably by staying poised at the free throw line to protect the lead [81-66].
- The Roadrunners made a three to close the game, but UAB already had a big lead to earn the win [81-69].
