BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball (11-7) hit five more home runs on Friday evening as the Blazers put together a 13-3 rout of Belmont (7-11). The Green and Gold now have 39 home runs this season which adds to their American Conference lead.
UAB hit two home runs in a 5-run first inning. John Paul Head continued his home run hot streak as he blasted another opposite field home run for a 2-run shot. Kevin Hall Jr. returned from his brief hiatus and hit a 3-run home run to give the Blazers a 5-0 lead after one inning.
Belmont got a single tally back in the top of the second. The Bruins cashed in a leadoff triple by Cavan McMeans and he scored on a Mike Sprockett RBI groundout.
Four more Blazers crossed home in the bottom of the second by way of three more home runs. Baylor Roberts smashed the second pitch he saw for a solo home run. Two batters later, John Paul Head hit his second home run in as many innings. The next hitter, Landon Beaver hit a towering shot just inside the right field foul pole to put UAB up 9-1 after two innings of play.
Neither side would score again until Belmont's half of the fifth inning. The Bruins plated two on back to back base hits by Charlie Davis and Landon Godsey to cut the UAB lead to 9-3.
The Green and Gold put the game away in the bottom of the fifth by way of four unearned runs. Alex Dupuy drove in Wesley Helms, John Paul Head brought home Kevin Hall Jr. and Dupuy, and Landon Beaver singled home Head to put UAB up, 13-3.
Not to be outdone by his offense, Mason Steele delivered a stellar performance on the mound. The junior right-hander tossed all seven innings for his season-best in innings pitched and recorded his second straight win. Steele's final line was 7.0 innings pitched, eight strikeouts, three runs allowed, and surrendered only one walk.
