South Florida Wins Pitchers Duel Over UAB, Avoids Sweep

TAMPA, FL – UAB Baseball (25-15, 10-5) was unable to complete the sweep of South Florida (27-12, 7-8) on Sunday as the Blazers dropped the third game of the series by a score of 1-0. USF's Kaden Smith and Ethan Sutton combined for the shutout.
The two teams combined for six hits in the game and just 12 base runners in a game that lasted just two hours and 35 minutes.
The game was scoreless all the way until the eighth inning of the game. Bradke Lohry roped a 1-out double to left field and remained there after a lineout. With two outs, Lance Trippel once again provided offense for USF as he carbon copied Lohry's hit to give the Bulls their first lead of the weekend.
That lead would hold despite Landon Beaver picking up a 1-out double in the ninth inning.
Justin Hicks gave the Blazers a chance to win as the sophomore right-hander tossed 5.1 scoreless innings to start the game. The 5.1 innings and 74 total pitches are career highs for Hicks.
NOTES
- The Blazers' pitching staff gave the team chances to win this weekend as they only allowed three walks in 26 innings this weekend. Six of the seven pitchers did not walk a batter.
- Sunday's game was just the second time this season UAB has been shutout.
- Landon Beaver hit his team-best 10th double of the season.
- Beaver was the lone player in the game with multiple hits. His two knocks gave him his 12th multi-hit game of the season.
- Beaver now has four multi-hit games in his last six.
UAB caps off its 4-game road swing with a trip to Tuscaloosa for the second game against Alabama in seven days. First pitch from Sewell-Thomas Stadium is set for 6 p.m. on SEC Network+.
