BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball head coach Randy Norton has announced the promotion of Ty Margenthaler to Associate Head Coach.
"Ty has earned this, plain and simple," Norton said. "He's an elite teacher, an elite recruiter, and more importantly, someone our players trust and believe in every day. He represents everything our program stands for, toughness, selflessness, and doing things the right way. I couldn't be more proud to name him Associate Head Coach."
Margenthaler earns the promotion after serving as an assistant coach during the 2025-26 season, where he played a key role in the development of UAB's forward group. His work with the Blazers frontcourt helped strengthen the team's interior presence on both ends of the floor.
Under Margenthaler's guidance, UAB's five forward players combined for 696 points while making an impact on the glass and defensively. The group totaled 476 rebounds, including 127 offensive rebounds and 349 defensive rebounds, while also adding 27 blocks – highlighting their physical presence in the paint throughout the season.
"I would like to thank Coach Norton for believing in and trusting me," Margenthaler said. "I'm excited about the future of our program. I will continue to work extremely hard to elevate our program to the top of the American Conference."
Margenthaler has more than 20 years of coaching experience, including four seasons as a head coach. He previously spent one season at North Alabama as an assistant coach. He helped guide a UNA player to Third Team All-ASUN, two Player of the Week awards and two Newcomer of the Week honors.
Before his time with the Lions, Margenthaler spent a season at Pittsburgh, where he served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator and worked closely with the post players. During his lone season with the Panthers, he helped guide forward Liatu King to All-ACC First Team, ACC Most Improved Player and ACC Player of the Week during the 2023-24 season.
He spent the 2022-23 campaign at South Dakota as the assistant coach, where he helped sophomore point guard Grace Larkins earn First Team All-Summit League honors as she became the first player in league history to rank in the top five in points (17.5 ppg), rebounds (8.0 rpg), assists (4.4 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).
Prior to South Dakota, Margenthaler spent six seasons at Saint Louis, including his last four years as the associate head coach. The Billikens made three WNIT appearances during that span and reached the WNIT Elite Eight in 2021. Saint Louis marked his second stint with head coach Lisa Stone, following five seasons on her staff at Wisconsin. During their time in Madison, the Badgers were the 2007 WNIT runner-up, set a program record of 23 wins and made the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
In between those two stops, he spent four seasons (2011-2015) as the head coach at SEMO. Margenthaler helped rebuild the program that was coming off back-to-back 21-loss seasons when he took over. In 2013-14, Southeast averaged 63.4 points per game, which was a 10-point-per-game increase from when Margenthaler took over.
Other assistant coaching stops for Margenthaler include Samford, Bradley and SIUE. He served as the recruiting coordinator at each stop. He has coached a pair of A-10 Players of the Year, seven All-Big Ten selections and one USA Basketball selection.
Margenthaler comes from an experienced basketball family. His father, Jack, coached men's basketball for 15 seasons at Western Illinois and 11 years at SIUE before retiring. His brother, Matt, has been the Minnesota State's head men's basketball coach since 2001.
