MACON, Ga. – The UAB men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Monday night, defeating Mercer 1-0 at Betts Stadium.
Tony Kim provided the game-winning goal in the 15th minute, while goalkeeper Ethan Schulz recorded five saves (and got the assist) to earn his first victory and shutout of the season.
UAB (1-1-1) scored the only goal of the game at the 14:49 mark when Schulz sent a long ball down the field to Kim. The senior forward chipped the ball over the head of Mercer goalkeeper Henry Hampshaw to give the Blazers a 1-0 advantage.
The Blazers carried the one-goal lead into halftime after outshooting the Bears 6-3. Schulz made two saves in the opening half to keep Mercer off the scoreboard.
UAB continued to create opportunities throughout the final 45 minutes, recording six shots and six corner kicks. The Blazers nearly added to their advantage on several occasions, but Mercer goalkeeper Hampshaw made saves on shots from Alan Melendez and Rylie Siddall.
The Blazers finished the night with a 12-7 advantage in shots and held 56 percent of the possession. UAB also earned eight corner kicks compared to five for Mercer.
