BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team held off a late rally from USC Upstate to earn a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Spartans on Saturday night at PNC Field.

The Blazers improved to 2-1-1 on the season with the win, while USC Upstate falls to 2-3.

UAB wasted little time finding its offensive rhythm, taking a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Sam Roberson found the back of the net off an assist from Matthew Garcia and Tony Kim.

The Spartans answered just 65 seconds later, but the tie did not last long. Ole Jessen put the Blazers back in front at 21:22, scoring his first goal of the season to give UAB a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

UAB extended its lead early in the second half. Tony Kim converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute before finding the back of the net again less than four minutes later, scoring off assists from Jessen and Lucas Rizzo to push the Blazers' advantage to 4-1.

USC Upstate responded with two goals of its own, cutting the deficit to 4-3 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Tolu Fabamifobee scored in the 58th minute before Josh Zawlocki found the net in the 79th minute.

Despite the late pressure from the Spartans, the Blazers' defense held firm over the final 12 minutes to secure the victory.

Kim led UAB with two goals, while Roberson and Jessen each added a goal. Jessen also recorded an assist. Goalkeeper Ethan Schulz made one save while earning the victory.

The two teams finished even in shots at 11 apiece, but UAB put seven shots on target compared to four for USC Upstate.
