UAB Caps 3-0 Weekend with Sweep of Montana

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The UAB volleyball team earned its fourth consecutive victory on Saturday, sweeping Montana to close out a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Golden Grizzly Invitational.
UAB seized control from the start, scoring eight of the match's first nine points to build an early advantage. The Blazers continued to pull away throughout the opening set, extending their lead to 11 after a late 4-0 run made it 23-12. Addyson Smock closed out the frame with a kill, giving UAB a 25-14 victory and a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers carried the momentum into the second set, taking an early 5-2 lead following a Smock service ace. Montana battled back to pull within one at 11-10, but UAB responded by building a 21-15 advantage after a Mia Reese block. The Grizzlies made a late push, cutting the deficit to 22-21, but Reese answered with a kill before Smock recorded a block and Reese followed with a service ace to secure the set, 25-21.
Montana jumped out to an early lead in the third set, but UAB remained within striking distance before making its move late. Trailing 17-14, the Blazers rattled off five consecutive points to take their first lead of the set, 19-17. UAB then scored three of the final four points, finishing off the sweep with a 25-22 third-set victory.
Kennedy Vaughn led the Blazers with 13 kills, while Reese and Makayla Meister each added 12. Rachel McCollum recorded a team-high 24 assists, and Smock posted a match-high six blocks.
The Blazers return to action next Thursday at the Alabama Showdown in Auburn, Ala. UAB will face Auburn at 6 p.m. before taking on South Alabama on Friday at 3 p.m.
