Blazers Drop Conference Opener at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The UAB volleyball team dropped its American Conference opener to Temple on Friday at McGonigle Hall.
UAB used a 3-0 run to take an early 7-4 lead in the opening set before Temple responded with a 7-2 run to take an 11-9 advantage. Following a kill from Makayla Meister, the Owls scored nine of the next 10 points to extend their lead to 19-11. Temple went on to take the opening set, 25-15.
The two teams battled back and forth early in the second set. A Temple attack error evened the score at 11-11 before the Owls scored three straight points. UAB answered with a 3-0 run of its own, highlighted by kills from Kennedy Vaughn and Mia Reese and a service ace from Vaughn, to tie the set at 14-14. The teams remained within a point of each other until Temple broke an 18-18 tie with three consecutive points. The Owls held on to take the set, 25-21.
Temple opened the third set with five straight points, but the Blazers continued to battle. Kills from Rachel McCollum and Vaughn helped UAB cut the deficit to 16-11. The Owls responded with a late run to close out the set, 25-13, and secure the conference-opening victory.
Reese led the Blazers with 11 kills while hitting .267. McCollum and Annastiina Tarkkanen each recorded double-digit assists, finishing with 12 and 10, respectively.
UAB closes out the opening weekend of American play on Sunday at Rice. First serve from Tudor Fieldhouse is set for 2 p.m.
