MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UAB volleyball team fell 3-1 at Memphis on Wednesday night inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Despite the setback, senior Mia Reese reached the 1,000-kill milestone in her four-year UAB career.
Memphis jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the opening set and continued to build its advantage before taking the frame 25-10.
The Tigers again took control early in the second set, opening a 10-4 advantage. After a Memphis kill extended the lead to 20-10, the Blazers began to chip away with three consecutive points. UAB was unable to overcome the early deficit, however, as Memphis claimed the set 25-18 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
UAB responded with a strong start in the third set, taking a 9-4 lead after an Addyson Smock block forced a Memphis timeout. The Tigers battled back to even the score at 18-18 before taking their first lead of the set at 21-20. With Memphis serving for the match at 24-23, the Blazers answered with three straight points, including the milestone kill from Reese, followed by a kill from Smock, to take the set 26-24 and extend the match.
The fourth set featured 11 ties and five lead changes as the two teams battled throughout. After the Blazers and Tigers were tied at 14-14, Memphis used a 4-0 run to take control. The Tigers held off UAB down the stretch to claim the set 25-19 and secure the 3-1 victory.
Reese and Kennedy Vaughn led the Blazers with nine kills apiece, while Smock recorded a team-high six total blocks. Annastiina Tarkkanen and Ingrid Dittmar finished in double figures in assists with 13 and 12, respectively.
UAB returns to action Sunday for its first home match of the season against Tulsa. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Hoover High School.
