BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Forward David Walker led four UAB players in double figures with 18 points and guard LeAndrew Bass recorded his first career "double-double" with 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds as the Blazers (6-5) defeated Virginia Commonwealth (7-6) 70-61 Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
The two teams battled evenly through the first minutes of the game. VCU then surged to a nine-point lead at 29-20 with 5:21 to play in the first half as guard Bo Jones keyed an 18-9 run with eight points. Jones scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the first half.
UAB fought back to cut the deficit to six at the half, as Walker bounced in a shot at the buzzer to make the score 34-28. Blazer forward Eric Batchelor led UAB with 11 points in the first half and finished with 16 for the game.
The Blazers battled to a tie at 38-38 at the 16:27 mark, and then traded the lead twice with the Rams before embarking on an11-0 run that began with a coast-to-coast layup by Bass at the 8:02 mark and ended six minutes later with a 63-54 UAB lead. UAB center Will Campbell, who had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, scored seven points during that stretch.
VCU would get as close as five points at 66-61 with 0:21 remaining, but Batchelor and Bass each made a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
