Forward Elvin Mims had a "double-double" with 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead Southern Mississippi (12-3, 3-1) to a 64-52 Conference USA victory over UAB (8-7, 1-2) Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
Mims scored 14 of his points and had eight rebounds in the second half, as the Golden Eagles held off several UAB rally attempts and never allowing the Blazers to move closer than eight points in the second half.
The Golden Eagles led 25-15 at the half and pushed their lead to as much as 17 early in the second half. UAB cut the margin to eight five times in the second half, the final time at 60-52 with 0:31 to play, but could never seize enough momentum to draw closer.
Southern Miss held UAB to only 15 points in the first half, tying a Blazer record for fewest points in a half. UAB shot only 24 percent from the field in the first half (6-25 overall), and went the final seven minutes of the period without scoring.
Guard LeAndrew Bass was the only UAB player to score in double figures, finishing the game with 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Forward David Walker led UAB with nine rebounds.
