BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Center Will Campbell tied the UAB single-game record with 20 rebounds and added 18 points as the Blazers (11-9, 4-4) defeated Houston (4-15, 1-6) in Conference USA action Wednesday evening at Bartow Arena.
It was the fifth "double-double" of the season for Campbell, who tied the mark set by former Blazer Carlos Williams vs. Grambling State at Bartow Arena on Dec. 1, 1996.
Campbell, who actually had a "double-double" by halftime with 14 points and 12 rebounds, narrowly missed tying his UAB career scoring high, which is 19 points, set earlier this season vs. Tulane (Jan. 7).
Guard P.J. Arnold was the only other UAB player to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points.
Forward Chad Hendrick led Houston with 18 points and was the only Cougar player to score in double figures.?? Center Patrick Okafor led Houston with 11 rebounds.
UAB forward David Walker went down with an injured hand midway through the first half.? After X-ray examination proved negative, Walker returned to the game and scored seven of his nine points in the second half.
There were five ties in the first half, the last at 18-18 with 7:49 to play.? The lead changed hands three times, the last time with 7:08 to play in the half as UAB took a 20-18 lead.? The Blazers' biggest lead of the first half was seven points with 3:27 to play as Campbell made a pair of free throws to give UAB a 30-23 advantage.? Houston's biggest lead of the first half was four points on two occasions early in the first half.?? The Blazers held a 34-29 lead at halftime.
UAB led the entire second half.? The Cougars cut the lead to two points at 38-36 with 14:48 remaining, as Alton Ford banked in a shot off the glass.?? The Blazers responded with six straight points to extend the lead to eight at 44-36 with 13:36 remaining.? UAB would eventually lead by 13 points, 62-49 with 1:52 to play.?
