Bubba Garcia scored just 38 seconds into the match and UAB made the score stand as No. 13 UAB beat third-ranked Saint Louis 1-0 in Conference USA men's soccer Wednesday night at UAB's West Campus Field.
The win puts UAB at 12-2 overall and 6-1 in Conference USA. The Blazers are now tied atop the standings with the Billikens who suffered their first loss in falling to 10-1 overall. UAB would now win the tiebreaker for the top seed in the conference tournament if the two teams remained tied at the end of the season.
Garcia's goal came off a chest pass from Flavio Monteiro. Garcia put the ball into the right corner of the goal at the 0:38 mark.
Saint Louis came into the game as the top scoring team in Conference USA and in the top ten in the nation, averaging 3.3 goals per match. The Blazer defense shut down the potent offense despite the Billikens getting 13 shots.
UAB freshman goalkeeper Clint Baumstark recorded eight saves in getting his eighth shutout of the season. That ties him for the UAB record for shutouts in a season. David Clemente had eight in 1999. Baumstark leads Conference USA in goals against average and shutouts.
?Saint Louis is by far the best team we have played all year and our guys did a great job of defending them,? Blazer head coach Mike Getman said. ?I liked our match-ups going into the game. Clint Baumstark was the man tonight playing a great game. I knew we had a good defense, but I did not think the score would be 1-0.?
The two teams came into the game splitting the last four matches between them. Twice they have met in the regular season and twice in the C-USA Tournament Championship match. The home team has now won each of the last six matches. Each team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament the past two years.
UAB continues C-USA play at Cincinnati, Sunday afternoon.
