BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Thomas Cox threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns to lead UAB to a 38-17 victory over TCU on Saturday.
Cox, making his third straight start since starter Jeff Aaron sprained an ankle, completed 9 of 18 passes with four completions of 30 yards or more.
Jegil Dugger ran for 86 yards and a touchdown, and Willie Quinnie caught four passes for 109 yards and a touchdown for UAB (5-4, 4-2 Conference USA).
TCU (4-5, 2-3) was led by Casey Printers, who threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns. But the Horned Frogs ran for only 20 yards against UAB, which entered the game ranked first in the NCAA Division I-A in rushing defense.
UAB took control of the game in the third quarter. Nick Hayes kicked a 50-yard field goal to give the Blazers a 17-3 lead. Then, Cox hit Roddy White on a 52-yard touchdown pass to make it 24-3.
TCU closed to 24-10 on a 29-yard scoring pass from Printers to Matt Schobel. But a 3-yard touchdown run by Kendal Gibson and a 45-yard interception return by Dio Hill put the game away for UAB.
UAB led 14-3 at halftime. TCU took a 3-0 lead when Nick Browne kicked a 21-yard field goal with 11:46 left in the second quarter.
UAB moved into scoring position when a 31-yard pass from Cox to Jason Southall carried the Blazers to the TCU 21. Two plays later, Dugger scored on a 7-yard run to put UAB in front 7-3.
TCU drove to the UAB 30. But Eddie Freeman forced a fumble on a reverse run by LaTarence Dunbar, and Nick Stewart recovered for UAB at the 37.
A 33-yard pass from Cox to Quinnie took UAB to the TCU 32. With 1:18 left in the first half, Cox and Quinnie hooked up on a 23-yard scoring pass to give UAB a 14-3 lead.
