TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Altron Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 34.1 seconds left as South Florida overcame dismal foul shooting to beat Alabama-Birmingham 61-60 on Saturday.
Jackson had 22 points for South Florida, which had streaks of nine and six missed free-throw attempts. The Bulls finished 9-of-24 from the stripe.
South Florida' Sam Sanders preserved the win by blocking LeAndrew Bass' last-second shot.
Will Campbell scored 12 points for UAB(12-10, 5-5 Conference USA), which had won four of five.
South Florida (15-8, 7-3) played without second-leading scorer B.B. Waldon, who missed his fourth straight game. Waldon has been suspended indefinitely. The Bulls also were without forward Chonsey Asbury, who could miss two weeks following knee surgery Thursday.
After trailing by 10 early in the second half, Jackson scored a transition basket that put South Florida ahead 50-49 with 10:43 to play.
UAB responded with seven straight points, including a 3-pointer by Tony Johnson, to go up 56-50 with seven minutes remaining. South Florida battled back again and regained the lead at 57-56 on Gerrick Morris' rebound slam at the 2:30 mark.
After trading the lead three times down the stretch, Jackson then converted the go-ahead free throws in the final minute.
Alabama-Birmingham lead by as many as 11 points before taking a 35-28 halftime lead.
