BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB (13-14, 5-4 Conference USA) defeated Georgia State 30-27, 30-26, 30-24 in volleyball action Tuesday evening at Bartow Arena.
Sophomore outside/right side hitter Lindsay Carnohan had 18 points on 14 kills, three service aces and two total blocks, while hitting for .357 to lead the Blazers. Sophomore outside hitter Breanne Swenson recorded her team-leading 13th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 16 digs to go along with 12.5 points for UAB. Sophomore outside hitter Isabel Oquendo added 10 kills and three total blocks while freshman setter Bilun Gunal posted 39 assists for the Blazers.
"It was really neat to see the depth of our team tonight," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "Those that came off the bench played really well. We wanted to rest Martina (Shields) tonight, coming into a tough conference weekend. She came in and did a good job playing back row. I think our team's confidence comes from the way we've been practicing lately. The consistency is great and it's really nice to have the team meeting the challenge week in and week out."
Georgia State (25-7, 8-1 Atlantic Sun) was led by senior outside hitter Shelbylynn McBride who had 11 points on 11 kills while hitting for .348. Junior setter April DeCoste added 38 assists for the Panthers.
UAB next travels to Chicago to face Conference USA rival DePaul (11-16, 3-7 C-USA) Friday at 7 p.m.
