UAB Track and Field Places Ninth At Conference USA Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ----- The UAB track and field team concluded the 2004 Conference USA Championships with a ninth-place finish as the Blazers tallied 47 points on the weekend, including 42 on Saturday, the final day of competition.
UAB's highest finish came when Genoah Collins placed second in the 800-meters with a time of 2:13.63.
In addition to Collins, the Blazers tallied four more top-five finishes. In the 4x100-meter relay, UAB recorded a time of 45.85, good for fourth place. Theresa Smith placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.01, while Judy Shepherd was fifth with a personal-best time of 14.14. In the 400-meter hurdles, Amanda Hart was fourth overall with a time of 1:03.03.
UAB had four sixth-place finishes as well. In the 1500-meters, Emry McKay placed sixth with a time of 4:42.60. Adrienne Duke was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles, running the event in 1:04.22. Stephanie McCauley tallied a sixth-place finish in the 200-meters, recording a personal best of 24.52. The Blazers' 4x400-meter relay also finished in sixth, with a time of 3:50.04.
McCauley was seventh overall in the 100-meters with a time of 11.99, while Oriana Carter placed eighth in the event with a time of 12.15. In the triple jump, Penny Shields finished ninth with a jump of 11.52 meters, while Erin Harris jumped 11.38 meters, good enough for 10th overall.
In the 5000-meters, UAB had four top-15 finishers and set three personal bests, as freshmen McKay, Elizabeth Ambrus and Jennifer Thompson all broke their previous bests. McKay was 11th overall with a time of 17:42.98, while Ambrus ran the event in 17.43.33, placing 12th. Amanda Kara was 14th with a time of 18:00.37 and Thompson finished in 15th, running an 18:03.97.
Houston won the championship with 121 points, while TCU was second with 120 and USF tallying 103.
