Hood, Mays Highlight Blazer Track Team At Clemson Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. ----- UAB freshman Kendal Hood and junior Whitney Mays registered first place finishes in the mile run and 3,000-meter run, respectively, here Saturday to highlight the Blazer track team's performances at the Clemson Opener.
The two-day meet was UAB's first competition of the indoor season.
Hood, from Spring, Texas, raced to a winning time of 5:18.19 to capture first in the mile while Mays led a UAB 1-2-3 finish in the 3,000. A Bloomington, Ill. native, Mays finished with a time of 10:15.41, followed by teammates Elizabeth Hilligoss (10:35.37) and Jakia Williams (10:52.14).
UAB also had a pair of second-place individual efforts as junior Tara Colvin of Tuscaloosa was second in the 400-meter dash at 56.01 and Genoah Collins, a senior from Huntsville, was runner-up in the 800 at 2:13.63. The Blazers' Alina Varpiotaite was third in the 800 with a time of 2:14.07.
UAB also had a second-place relay finish as the 4x400 team of Amber Walker, Varpiotaite, Collins and Colvin finished at 3:48.47, just behind Charlotte's winning team at 3:47.60.
In the 60-meter dash, Stacey Adewakun was fifth at 7.67 while teammate Stephanie McCauley placed seventh at 7:68. Adewakun was seventh in the 200 meters at 25.23.
Senior jumper Deborah Hawkins followed up her fourth place finish of Friday in the long jump with a sixth place effort in the triple jump Saturday at 39-5 ¼.
