IRVING, Texas ----- UAB sophomore Whitney Mays has been named the co-Conference USA Female Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week. The announcement, which was made by the conference office Tuesday, is the first such honor of Mays' career.
"This is great news," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "It's always a proud moment for a student-athlete and a coach when they are recognized by the conference for an outstanding performance. What Whitney did in the steeplechase, in only her second season, is a testament to her. We're looking forward to more good things from her this season and we're proud of have Blazer recognized by Conference USA."
Mays clocked a winning time of 10:42.32 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the LSU Tiger Relays to break the UAB school record and qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regional. Her time was the fifth-best in the country as she also ran career-best times in her legs of the distance medley relay squad that finished second and the 4x800-meter relay.
The Blazers will take next weekend off for spring break before heading to the Texas Relays beginning April 7th, in Austin, Texas.
