UAB Track And Field Has Another Successful Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. --- The UAB track and field team had another strong showing this weekend, despite splitting the squad between two meets. The Blazers finished up competition at the Drake Relays, while most of the team competed in the one-day National City Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky.
"We had a good weekend," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "We are where we need to be right now. We're going to take the next two weeks to prepare for the Conference USA Championship."
At the Drake Relays Saturday, the Blazers placed sixth in the sprint medley relay. UAB's Stephanie McCauley, Oriana Carter, Tara Colvin and Genoah Collins posted a time of 3:58.60.
The Blazers were impressive at Western Kentucky, posting two victories and 10 top-five finishes. Elizabeth Hilligoss took the title in the 5000 meters, running a personal best 17:25.52. Katryce Sykes was the winner of the 400-meter hurdles, as she recorded a personal-best time of 1:03.81. Also in the 400-meter hurdles, Erika Russ placed second overall with a time of 1:05.38.
UAB's two relay teams each placed third. In the 4x100-meter relay, the Blazers recorded a time of 48.99, while UAB finished the 4x400-meter relay in 4:04.09.
Deborah Hawkins finished second in the long jump, after posting a personal-best jump of 5.79 meters. Erin Harris was third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.03 meters.
UAB placed second and third overall in the 1500 meters. Whitney Mays finished second with a personal-best time of 4:46.33, while Jakia Williams was third with a time of 4:50.61.
Mays recorded another personal best in the 5000 meters, finishing third with a time of 17:53.50. Additionally, Katie Stepp set a personal-best in the same event with a time of 18:09.31, good for fifth overall.
Finally, Harris was second in the 100-meter hurdles posting a time of 15.93, while Mary Kim Webb placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:35.60.
