UAB Track & Field Heads To Conference USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB track and field travels to El Paso, Texas for the 2006 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Kidd Field on the campus of UTEP beginning Thursday. The three-day event will feature some of the top track and field athletes in the country as more than 100 athletes that have qualified for NCAA Regional competition will be competing for the league's seven men's teams and 12 women's teams.
UAB, who placed eighth in the 2005 championship, was solid in its last weekend of the regular season. On April 27, junior Elizabeth Ambrus shattered her own school record by more than 12 seconds after running the 5,000 meters in 16:33.48 at the Drake Relays. The following day, UAB's distance medley relay team broke a school record with a time of 11:43.63. During the same weekend, the rest of the Blazer team competed at the National City Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky. The Blazers were impressive at Western Kentucky, posting two victories and 10 top-five finishes. Elizabeth Hilligoss took the title in the 5000 meters, while Katryce Sykes was the winner of the 400-meter hurdles.
