KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ----- Elizabeth Ambrus' sixth place finish in the 5,000-meter run and a personal best effort by Erin Harris in the long jump highlighted UAB's performance here Friday at the NCAA Mideast Regional Track and Field Championships.
Ambrus clocked a time of 16:44.42, her second best of the spring season, to place sixth in the 5,000. The top five finishers earned automatic qualifying berths in the upcoming NCAA Championships, but Ambrus could also gain a spot as the next five from each of the four regions go into a pool for at-large selection.
Notre Dame's Molly Huddle won the 5,000 with a time of 16:24.51.
A junior from Arlington Heights, Ill., Ambrus has already qualified for the NCAAs in the 10,000.
Harris, a junior from Tuscaloosa, Ala.,, turned in her best long jump effort of her career as she leaped to a 10th place effort of 19-11, just missing a shot in the finals as the top nine advanced.
"Elizabeth ran another great race," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "She went from 11th place to sixth in the last mile. And even though Erin just missed getting to the finals in the long jump, anytime you have a personall best, you have to be pleased."
The Blazers' other competitor Friday, junior Genoah Collins was fourth in her 800-meter heat and 21st overall with a time of 2:14.87.
