UAB's Ambrus Finishes 23rd In 10K At NCAA Championships

SACARAMENTO, Calif. ----- UAB junior Elizabeth Ambrus capped off her outstanding 2005-06 season Thursday night with a 23rd place finish in the 10,000-meter run here at the NCAA Championships.
Ambrus finished with a time of 35:19.28 in the event. The race was won by Arizona State's Victoria Jackson who clocked a time of 32:54.72. Rounding out the top five were Clara Horowitz of Duke (33:00.85), Mary Davies of Oklahoma State (33:08.00), Amy Hastings of Arizona State (33:41.18). Auburn's Angela Homan was fifth at 33:47.14.
Ambrus qualified for the NCAAs in the 10,000 when she ran 34:07.95 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 14, breaking an 11-year-old school record. She also qualified for the NCAAs in the 5,000 but declared only for the 10K since the 5,000 semifinals were Wednesday and the finals are scheduled for Friday evening.
Qualifying in two events for the NCAA Championships is just the latest accomplishment for Ambrus, a native of Arlington Heights, Ill. She was the 2005 Conference USA cross country champion, a 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships qualifier and also was named the C-USA Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
