Track And Field Opens Indoor Season In Stellar Fashion

CLEMSON, S.C. ----- The UAB track and field team began its 2007-08 indoor season with three impressive performances that resulted in two first-place finishes on the first day of the Clemson Opener.
The Blazers took first and second place in the distance medley relay. The team of Alina Varpiotaite, Tara Colvin, Bianca Le' Blanc, Whitney Mays took the top spot with a time of 12:17.36. The squad of Lacey Wright, Jacinta Scruggs, Katie Horton and Stephanie Gammon finished second with a time of 12:17.06
UAB's other first-place finish was captured by Elizabeth Hilligoss in the 5,000-meter race in a time of 17:54.14, more than 90 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Erika Russ advanced to Saturday's finals in the 60-meter hurdles. Russ ran an 8.91 to place eighth. Janelle Gaines placed 20th and Samantha Hamilton 29th in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles.
Katrina Harrell qualified for the 60-meter dash finals on Saturday with a 7.74 performance that was good for tenth place. Russ and Amber Walker placed 27th and 29th respectively in the event.
Timara McMillan and Katryce Sykes both participated in the long jump for the Blazers.
The Blazers will conclude its competition at the Clemson Opener by competing in eight events on Saturday.
