UAB Wins Three Events At Final Day Of Clemson Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. ----- The UAB track and field team continued its success in distance events at the final day of the Clemson Opener, taking three top spots at the season's first indoor meet.
On Saturday, the Blazers took home first-place finishes in the 800-meter run, mile run, and 3,000-meter run.
"I was very please with several performances," head coach Ray Stanfield said. "We did particularly well in all the distance events as well the 60-meter hurdles. The seniors really had a good showing as well."
Elizabeth Ambrus won the 3,000-meter run and finished ahead of two other cross country runners who qualified for the national meet on Nov. 19. She also led a Blazers pack that had three top-five finishes. Stephanie Gammon took fourth (10:34.34) and Kristina Olsen placed fifth (10:55.34) in the event.
Whitney Mays took an individual title at the Clemson Opener for the second straight year, posting a 5:10.59 mark in the mile run. Last season, Mays placed first in the 3,000-meter race. Lacey Wright (5:32.80) finished in eighth place in the mile run.
Alina Varpiotaite claimed her second first-place finish at the event, winning the 800-meter race in 2:14.97. Friday, she ran the first leg for the first-place distance medley relay team. Katie Horton (2:26. 53) placed tenth.
Saturday's three first-place finishes gave UAB a total of five on the weekend. On day one, the Blazers won the distance medley relay and 5,000-meter run.
Tara Colvin, an all-conference performer last year, placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.84.
Erica Whitby placed fifth in the high jump after clearing 1.58 meters. Katrina Harrell (7.78) tied for ninth-place in the 60-meter dash finals and Erika Russ (8.90) took eighth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles.
UAB returns to action Jan. 11 at the Houston Opener.
