Blazers Finish Strong at C-USA Indoor Championship

HOUSTON ---- The UAB track and field team had a strong finish to the 2008 Conference USA Indoor Championship to place fourth out of 12 teams.
Distance runner Elizabeth Ambrus placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a mark of 9:32.17. She went down to the wire and finished under two seconds of the first-place finisher. The time was lifetime best for the senior who took the league crown in the 5,000-meter run Saturday.
Mid-distance runner Alina Varpiotaite came in second in the 800-meter run. Varpiotaite ran to a 2:10.13 mark in the event, while Genoah Collins followed closely behind (2:13.17) to finish fifth.
UAB's 4x400-meter relay team placed second with a time of 3:46.81.
Tara Colvin ran a 55.88 to finish fourth in the 400-meter run. She also ran the final leg of the 4x400-meter relay and ran in the distance medley relay that placed third Saturday.
Total the Blazers had 13 athletes who received all-conference honors.
The Blazers' strong finish to the event helped them to 55 points and the fourth place finish. Rice took the team title scoring 133.5 points. UTEP placed second (114.5) and Memphis third (74.5).
It was the second straight year that UAB finished fourth at the indoor league meet.
Erica Whitby and Penny Shields participated in the high jump for UAB. Whitby cleared 1.63 meters and Shields 1.58 meters.
Samantha Hamilton jumped 12.06 meters and Shields 11.02 meters in the triple jump.
Katrina Harrell was an eighth-place finishers in the 200-meter finals.
