BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB distance runner Elizabeth Ambrus will be one of 16 runners competing in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship this Friday in Fayetteville, Ark.
Ambrus' 16:24.85 time last weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. helped her qualify for her first indoor championship. It will be the fourth national championship event that the senior will compete in. She has qualified for a total of five events in her career.
In her latest outing, Ambrus improved her qualifying time by seven seconds. It contiuned a trend that Ambrus has been on lately. In her last four meets, the senior distance runner has recorded personal bests two times in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter races.
She won the Conference USA title in the 5,000-meter run for the third time in her career earlier this month in Houston. Her time of 16:31.83 set a then-school record and helped her become the first league runner to achieve win league titles in the 5K run. She also set the C-USA Indoor meet record and also the track record.
The Arlington Heights, Ill. native, has competed in three previous national meets. Ambrus has participated at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 2005 and 2007. She ran the 10,000-meter run at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. That year she also qualified in the 5,000-meter run.
Friday's 5000-meter run is scheduled to be held at 8:30 p.m. CST at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
