TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The UAB track and field completed the Alabama Relays with a second-place finish in the relay portion Sunday at the Sam Bailey Track Complex.
The Blazers participated eight relay events scoring 52 points to place second behind Western Michigan (63) in the Div. I relay portion of the meet. Bevill State won the non-Div. I portion with 54 points. Head coach Ray Stanfield called the meet an overall success.
"To finish second in the relay events the girls have to really extend themselves," head coach Ray Stanfield said. "We had several step up to the challenge at the meet."
UAB won the 4x1500-meter relay event with a time of 19:16.23. The Blazers also had second-place finishes in the sprint medley relay (3:56.08), 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay (59.92) and 4x800-meter relay (9:13.36).
Tara Colvin and Penny Shields were the only individuals to compete on the final day of the meet.
Colvin was one-thousandths of a second shy of regionally qualifying in the 400-meter dash. She finished with a time of 54.62 in the open that was moved from Saturday due to inclement weather.
Shields placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.64 meters just missing the qualifying distance.
UAB finished ahead of 11 other schools, including Samford which was third (25), Southern Miss in fourth (24) and Belmont in fifth (21).
The Blazers' consistency in the relay events helped them finish second, with no finish lower than fifth in the relays.
UAB's distance medley relay team, which excelled during the indoor season, placed third with a time of 12:08.48.
Fifth place finishes came in the 4x100-meter relay (47.23), 4x200-meter relay (1:42.66) and 4x400-meter relay (3:43.07).
Stanfield called the Alabama Relays an overall success for his team.
The Blazers captured two top finishes at the meet with Stephanie Gammon winning the 10,000-meter run (37:28.35) Sunday and Whitney Mays placing first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:24.58) Saturday.
