SOUTH BEND, Ind. ---- UAB senior Elizabeth Ambrus improved her chances Friday of competing for the 5,000-meter title at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship with a strong performance at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
The distance runner recorded a time of 16:24.85 in the event, an improvement of nearly seven seconds of her time in the event at the Conference USA Champions last weekend.
"Elizabeth is running at the highest level," head coach Ray Stanfield said. "At this point in the season she is exactly where she needs to be. Training is geared to run fast at the end when it counts and she exemplifies that."
Ambrus is red-hot right now as she has run personal bests in her last four meets, which includes two 3,000- and 5,000-meter races.
Last weekend at the Conference USA meet, Ambrus won the 5,000-meter, beating her closest competitor by more than 30 seconds. She broke the C-USA Indoor meet record, besting the six-year old mark of 16:33.24 set by USF's Tara Quinn. It was her third title in the event.
She followed up her title performance with a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run.
